How Email Can Ruin Your Job Search 2019

Some people say email may be dead, but it is very much alive – especially for the job hunter. Email can be your best friend or worst enemy depending on how you use it. Here are 10 common ways that abusing email can ruin your chance at getting a job. Lets take a look: 1. Using a shared email account You and your spouse might be very close, but dont use your email to share that with the world. Employers dont like to email job information to spouses. You can still use your [emailprotected] address, but set up an individual account for professional job hunting purposes. 2. Tacky email signatures Many people like to use their email signature to express themselves. Make sure your email does not include political or religious sayings. Also, the long winded inspirational sayings are very unprofessional as well. It is not professional and will turn off prospective employers. And heres a hint – your friends probably dont like it either! .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8 { padding:0px; margin: 0; padding-top:1em!important; padding-bottom:1em!important; width:100%; display: block; font-weight:bold; background-color:#eaeaea; border:0!important; border-left:4px solid #34495E!important; box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -moz-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -o-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -webkit-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); text-decoration:none; } .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8:active, .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; text-decoration:none; } .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8 { transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; } .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8 .ctaText { font-weight:bold; color:inherit; text-decoration:none; font-size: 16px; } .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8 .post Title { color:#000000; text-decoration: underline!important; font-size: 16px; } .u98164add004c44940b827f73853bd5e8:hover .postTitle { text-decoration: underline!important; } READ Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management Teaching People Skills for Effective Management3. Weird fonts The weird font you downloaded for your email may look cool on your computer, but chances are your recipients do not have it so the font defaults to something else. That means it could easily be over or undersized. Also, dont use fonts like comic sans either. That font is unprofessional and makes you look like a little kid. Stick to plain old Arial or Times New Roman. 4. Stationary Email stationary = tacky. Writing an email is not the same as writing a letter. Dont use stationary. 5. Firewalls, forms and anti-spam blockers Everyone hates spam email, but do not make an employer fill out an anti-spam form to send you an email. Chances are they wont do it. 6. Check your spam folder Many times email software will filter out legitimate email messages from potential employers because it does not recognize their address. Make sure to check your spam messages daily. .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2 { padding:0px; margin: 0; padding-top:1em!important; padding-bottom:1em!important; width:100%; display: block; font-weight:bold; background-color:#eaeaea; border:0!important; border-left:4px solid #34495E!important; box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -moz-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -o-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -webkit-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); text-decoration:none; } .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2:active, .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; text-decoration:none; } .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2 { transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; } .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2 .ctaText { font-weight:bold; color:inherit; text-decoration:none; font-size: 16px; } .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2 .post Title { color:#000000; text-decoration: underline!important; font-size: 16px; } .u75e3d706510980c2a19f5dea692273d2:hover .postTitle { text-decoration: underline!important; } READ A Convenient Education In Criminal Justice7. Sending a resume and cover letter to multiple addresses You dont want to make it look like youre sending out your resume and cover letter to a bunch of organizations at once. You want to make sure you only send it to one employer at a time because it makes it look like youre performing a targeted job search. 8. Unprofessional email address You should know this by now, but never use an unprofessional email address. Sexy Sara or Gangstaboi112 may have been cool in college, but now its time for you and your email address to grow up! 9. Poor formatting No need to format your email like a letter that includes your address and the employers address. Doing so makes you look like an email newbie. 10. Using work address This is common, but make sure if youre going to use work time to apply for jobs use another email address. Employers will assume youre going to be doing the same thing to them and not hire you. Its also very unethical to use your current employers time and resources to apply for jobs. .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d { padding:0px; margin: 0; padding-top:1em!important; padding-bottom:1em!important; width:100%; display: block; font-weight:bold; background-color:#eaeaea; border:0!important; border-left:4px solid #34495E!important; box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -moz-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -o-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); -webkit-box-shadow: 0 1px 2px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.17); text-decoration:none; } .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d:active, .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; text-decoration:none; } .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d { transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; } .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d .ctaText { font-weight:bold; color:inherit; text-decoration:none; font-size: 16px; } .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d .post Title { color:#000000; text-decoration: underline!important; font-size: 16px; } .u37b101c5fe1675cdcf9a5b06ebd9615d:hover .postTitle { text-decoration: underline!important; } READ New Jersey Colleges and Universities Pursuing Online and Campus Based Education in New JerseyRelated ArticlesIncrease your income with an Online Psychology DegreeWhat Are Free Accounting Software ProgramsBachelor Degree in Business AdministrationGraduate StudiesBusiness Administration Jobs Work as an Administrative Assistant with an Associate Degree in BusinessReasons Why You Shoul Become a Teacher
